How much money do you throw away by discarding food items that are past the “sell by” or “best by” dates? There was a recent segment on the Today Show about “sell by” dates.

Experts say it is safe to use most items past the date on the package. The date on the package has more to do with when the manufacturer thinks the quality and taste of the product will be affected and not the safety of the product. They also said there have been no reported illnesses due to eating food items that were past the “use by date”

One way to use up items before they do go bad is to have Pantry Challenges regularly. A Pantry Challenge is to try to use items you already have on hand instead of buying more items. .
